Dr Ivan Puah, Medical Director

A complete day-by-day recovery timeline on what to expect from the day of surgery through the next 6 months, including a detailed guide on compression vests.

Table of Contents

Gynecomastia surgery is a day surgery procedure where patients can be discharged home on the same day. Generally, most patients can return to work within 2 to 3 days.

Most patients notice visible improvement immediately, with the final results becoming more apparent between 3 and 6 months as swelling subsides and the new masculine chest shape becomes more apparent.

Here’s a complete day-by-day recovery timeline detailing what to expect from the day of surgery through the following 6 months, including a detailed guide on the compression vests.

Quick Recovery Summary

Return to sedentary work 2 - 3 days
Stitches removal 7 - 10 days

Compression Vest Guide Post-gynecomastia Surgery

After gynecomastia surgery, wearing a medical-grade compression vest is mandatory, as its benefits transcend physical healing.

This guide will provide detailed information regarding the selection, wear, and care of compression vests following gynecomastia surgery.

Benefits of Compression Vest

Reduces Swelling & Bruising Helps to minimise post-surgical swelling.

Its gentle pressure helps reduce inflammation and fluid buildup, promoting faster healing.
Prevention of Uneven Contours Its consistent pressure promotes even healing.

Helps mould the chest into its new shape after surgery and maintain its new contour.
Psychological Benefits Helps improve body image by enhancing a more streamlined chest appearance, boosting self-confidence

How to choose the Right Compression vests

  • Material: Vests made from breathable, elastic, moisture-wicking fabrics are a more comfortable option, as they prevent skin irritation.
  • Size: The vests should be snug. Measure your chest circumference and follow the sizing chart carefully for the best fit so it does not feel restrictive.
  • Design: Choose a vest that you are comfortable with. Vest designs come with adjustable straps or even full-coverage that offers optimal support.
  • Style: Some patients prefer compression garments in a shirt or tank-top style rather than a vest. Whatever design you choose, make sure it does not restrict your movement.

How to Wear Compression Vests

  • Daily wear: Wear the compression vest for 24 hours a day for 6 to 8 weeks post-surgery. Gradually reduce wear as advised.
  • Application: Gently wrap the vest around your chest, ensuring there are no folds or gaps. Do not excessively pull the vest to avoid tugging the stitches and opening the incision sites.
  • Comfort: If it is more comfortable for you, wear a thin undershirt underneath the vests for added comfort, but avoid adding bulk that could shift the placement of the compression vests.

How to Care for Compression Vests

  • Washing: It is recommended to wash the compression vests by hand daily and use plant-based detergents to avoid skin irritation and preserve their structure and fabric quality.
  • Elasticity: Replace the vest if it no longer fits well as your swelling subsides, to ensure optimal compression.
  • Hygiene: Rotate between multiple vests. A dirty compression vest can increase the risk of skin infections.
@amarisbclinic In one of Dr Ivan Puah's studies in 2025, he analysed 602 gynecomastia cases that he operated between January 2018 and December 2024 to prove that gynecomastia affects men of all ethnicities in Singapore — debunking stereotypes that single out one racial group. The study identified the patient demographics of individuals who sought gynecomastia surgery from Dr Ivan Puah. #fyp #foryousingapore #gynecomastia #enlargedmalebreast #medicaltok #medicaltiktok ♬ original sound - Amaris B. “Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes male breast swelling, pain and distress for affected individuals. It greatly affects one’s self-esteem and mental well-being. Many patients I’ve treated have grappled with extremely low self-esteem. Gynecomastia surgery helps them to improve their body confidence and self-esteem while reducing physical discomfort,” shares Dr Ivan Puah, an MOH-accredited liposuction doctor who has successfully treated men with gynecomastia for more than 20 years in Singapore.
