Skin Ageing – A Look at Managing Anti-Ageing and Skin Health
How’s your skin health? Are you seeing more dark patches and freckles or sagging around the eyes and cheeks?
PDO Lift[1, 2, 3] is a non-surgical skin lifting treatment using Polydioxanone threads (PDO). These synthetic dissolvable threads are not new in the medical industry.

PDO Lift is helpful for those aged 25 to 60.
A softer, non-surgical skin-lifting option for the face and body[7]
Subtle skin-lifting results (not a pulled and tight look)
Improves definition along the jawline through jowl lifting[4]
Reduces facial folds[4]
Stimulates collagen production months after the PDO thread placement[7]
Improves facial contours, such as lifting the cheeks subtly
Softens nasolabial and marionette folds[7]
Reduces fine lines and wrinkles[7]

| Treatments | FACELIFT | THREADLIFT |
|---|---|---|
| Administration | Surgically removing and tightening laxed skin and muscles | Inserting various types of PDO threads |
| Duration | 2 - 4 hours depending on the extent of the surgery | 30 - 45 minutes |
| Effect | 10 years or so. Face shape may alter if you gain drastic weight | 12 months or so |
| Downtime | 2 weeks for initial swelling and recovery. 6 - 9 months for surgical scars to subside | Minimal downtime within days; aftercare is necessary |
| Risk | Risks associated with any form of surgery, including anaesthesia, infection, nerve damage, and scarring and more | Tightness, swelling, soreness and bruising [5] |
Treatment such as PDO Lift (using Polydioxanone threads) is marked as a medical device in Singapore under HSA regulation. It can only be prescribed and carried out by registered and trained medical doctors in Singapore.
Moreover, thread lifting needs both skill and a good understanding of facial anatomy to keep patients safe and achieve the desired look. Knowing the anatomy is imperative to reduce complications and maintain the natural function of facial features for the patients[8].
What is the material in the PDO thread?
PDO material has been in use for more than 30 years in various medical disciplines such as plastic surgery and gynaecology treatments because of its high tensile strength, good pliability and smooth tissue passage.
How long will the results last?
Results generally will last around 12 months. As the threads are biodegradable, they will gradually disintegrate to be absorbed by the body.
Thanks to the collagen stimulation effect of PDO threads, new collagen is built over time, which helps to maintain the lifting effect.
