As we age, our skin loses elasticity resulting in sagging and loose skin. This process is known as intrinsic aging where over time, the body’s ability to produce collagen and elastin decreases. Another cause is extreme or rapid weight loss.
When we gain weight, our skin stretches to accommodate. When that weight is lost, the skin is unable to retract as much resulting in the loose skin in certain areas of the body and also visible with the appearance of eye bags and a slack jaw. Aging reduces our collagen production capabilities, which is why the stretched skin results in a sagging appearance.
Exercise commonly results in increased muscles – same for the face. Facial exercises do firm up skin, but they can also cause expression lines. So while you may be able to eliminate those basset hound-like eyes, you might just end up with crows’ feet.
It won’t, but it can lead to sleep wrinkles. These are creases and fine lines on your body and face you see in the morning. As we age and with lesser collagen being produced, these can become permanent. Best advice would be to try and sleep on your back.
Sagging skin is often associated with aging while loose skin is common with weight loss. Loose skin is often the result of the loss of skin elasticity and in weight loss, and its appearance is often mistaken as body fat.Genetics sometimes play a role when it comes to skin elasticity, but in weight loss, it is directly the result of losing the weight rapidly or having been carrying excess weight for a long time.
