Psychological Effects of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia and pseudogynecomastia may look the same physically, but they are very two different conditions

Gynecomastia VS Pseudogynecomastia

Gynecomastia has negative psychological impact on male adults and teens.

Definition

Gynecomastia
Involves only the glandular tissue or glandular tissue with a combination of excess fat tissues on the chest.

✕ Pseudogynecomastia
Due to only fat deposits without the involvement of glandular tissues.

Cause

Gynecomastia
Hormonal imbalance leading to the development of enlarged breast tissues. It can affect one or both breasts.

✕ Pseudogynecomastia
Not related to hormones. It is simply due to the extra fat accumulation in the chest area, usually caused by weight and/or fat gain.

Tell the difference

Gynecomastia
The affected area can feel sore, tender, and/or painful, accompanied with swelling and sometimes, nipple discharge. You will feel a firm, rubbery lump in one or both breasts.

✕ Pseudogynecomastia
Breasts feel soft and evenly enlarged. There is no pain or soreness upon touch. Your areolas are not enlarged, and your nipples are not sore or discharging.

Recommended treatments

Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia surgery involving 360° Glandular Tissue Dissection (360°GTD®) and MDC-Sculpt® lipo technique

✕ Pseudogynecomastia
VASER Lipo with MDC-Sculpt® Lipo technique

Gynecomastia GRADES

Excess male breast tissue is divided into four different “grades”, based on the severity of the problem.

Grade I

The initial stage is characterised by minor breast enlargement without the development of excess skin.

The excess skin, at this stage is found around the areola which is the coloured tissue that is surrounding the nipple.

Grade II

As the gynecomastia condition enters into the next stage, there will be a development of moderate breast enlargement without the development of excess skin.

However, with enlarged male breast tissue, it now extends beyond the areola, with a minor degree of enlargement.

Grade III

At this stage, there will be moderate breast enlargement with the development of excess skin.

As the enlarged male breast tissue extends further into the breast zone, the male chest starts to look slightly like the feminine breasts and at this stage, the condition becomes clearly noticeable by others.

Grade IV

As the gynecomastia enters the final stage, the condition is further aggravated with breast enlargement and excess skin.

At this stage of the gynecomastia condition, patients will find that their chest appears similar to that of a woman’s breasts.

Gynecomastia Self-Check

Suspect that you may be suffering from gynecomastia? Do a self-check!

Pinch Test

When you pinch typical breast tissue, it usually feels firm. The tissue may also resist the pinch a little. Also, when you pinch the areola from end to end with your thumb and forefinger, the tissue rim should be no bigger than 1/2 cm in diameter. When one has gynecomastia, there would be no resistance and no tissue rim.

Visual Inspection

Normal male chest has a thin layer of tissue with small flat areolas. You are certainly suffering from gynecomastia if your chest looks more feminine-looking, has puffy nipples, and abnormally wide areolas.

Touch Assessment

If your enlarged male breasts have a firm mound of glandular tissue around the areola area and feels painful or tender to the touch, you have a medical condition called gynecomastia.

Our Result Difference

Gynecomastia surgery performed by Dr. Ivan Puah with his 360° Glandular Tissue Dissection (360°GTD®️) and MDC-Sculpt® lipo technique yields a consistent success rate. Proprietary 360° Glandular Tissue Dissection (360°GTD®️) and MDC-Sculpt® lipo technique allows:

• Thorough glandular tissue removal
• Precise chest sculpting
• Minimal scarring and incidence of haematoma
• Lesser downtime, bruising and pain.
• Faster recovery with minimal disruption to your daily activities.

GYNECOMASTIA FAQs

What are the causes of gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can be caused by hormonal irregularities, certain medical conditions, certain medications, such as anti-androgens, anti-anxiety or antidepressant medicines, and anabolic steroid for bodybuilding, excessive consumption of alcohol. In some cases, the causes of gynecomastia may be due to genetics or simply, idiopathic.

How is gynecomastia classified?

Gynecomastia, in general, is classified into:

• True gynecomastia (where glandular tissue is the only cause)
• Mixed gynecomastia (where it involves both glandular and excess fat tissues. This is also most commonly seen)
• Pseudogynecomastia (where it involves only the proliferation of chest fat tissues)

True and mixed gynecomastia are divided into four different "grades," based on the severity of the problem.

How is gynecomastia diagnosed?

During the clinical assessment, Dr. Ivan Puah will assess the breast size, degree of breasts droopiness, the presence of excess skin, glandular tissues and nipple puffiness, your skin elasticity and chest shape. He will also discuss with you on his treatment approach and plan after the assessment is done.

Can I exercise or diet gynecomastia away?

Unfortunately, it is impossible to reduce overly enlarged male breasts with diet and exercise. In some cases, excess chest fat may respond to diet and excuse, but glandular tissues do not. This male breast disorder will require surgery to address the issue effectively.

Will topical creams, non-surgical treatment and massages rectify gynecomastia?

Despite what's being purported, there is no scientific evidence to prove that topical creams, non-surgical fat reduction machines such as fat freezing, or massage techniques can solve the condition.

Where is gynecomastia surgery performed? how long does it take?

At Amaris B. Clinic, our patients' safety means everything to us. Cases are performed in our accredited operating theatre, with a team of anesthesiologists and experienced surgically-trained staff nurses and clinical team.

Our anesthesiologists offer comfortable twilight sedation (no GA) to minimise anaesthesia's side effects, allowing the best possible care, safety, and monitoring for you during the procedure.

Gynecomastia surgery takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Patients are discharged on the same day, and most patients can resume work within 1 to 2 days.

How can I tell if my son or husband has gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia can adversely impact one’s quality of life and lead to deep-seated feelings of low self-esteem and even social withdrawal. Other long-term psychological effects that teenage and adult males can experience include:

• A change in behaviour or demeanour
• Becoming moody or depressed
• Wearing more layers of clothing or choosing only baggy or loose-fitting clothes
• Gradual withdrawal from social activities
• Avoiding removing their shirt in front of others
• Low self-worth and a lack of confidence
• Anhedonia or no longer finding pleasure in the activities they used to enjoy

How much does a gynecomastia surgery cost in Singapore?

In Singapore, gynecomastia surgery costs vary. The cost depends on several factors, including the doctor's experience, skills and complexity of the gynecomastia case.

At Amaris B. Clinic, we understand that each gynecomastia case is different. When it comes to gynecomastia surgery, we plan our approach to suit your unique condition and body goals.

Without an in-person consultation and clinical assessment, it is impossible to provide accurate costing. The total cost will vary depending on your body goal, the complexity involved, and the procedure's extensiveness.

Who are the candidates for gynecomastia surgery in Singapore?

Gynecomastia surgery is recommended for men:

• who are suffering from gynecomastia for longer than 12 months,
• whose conditions do not resolve independently or with other means of management,
• who have prominent bilateral breasts enlargement or unilateral (one-sided) breasts asymmetry,
• who have protruding and prominent areolas, and/or
• who have saggy breasts following massive weight loss.

What is the success rate of gynecomastia surgery?
